Silk is a natural protein fiber produced from the cocoon of the larve of certain worms. The best known silk is the one obtained from the cocoon of the larve of mulberry worm. India has a long history of production of silk. In the eastern parts of India, silk is known as Resham, while in south India, silk is known as Pattu. India is the second largest producer of silk in the world, after China. Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu produce about 97% of the mulberry silk produced in India.
